Company Culture…What’s all the hubbub?

October 4, 2013 By Kim Leave a Comment

You can’t go anywhere in the business or corporate space without hearing the word “culture”.  Companies boast about their culture and/or employees complain about it.  In my opinion the word culture is far often used and overused without awareness, intention or thought.

Corporate Culture:  A blend of the values, beliefs, taboos, symbols, rituals and myths all companies develop over time ~Entrepreneur’s encyclopedia

I agree with this definition and feel the most unfortunate part of it is that many companies don’t intentionally develop it.  Rather it gets developed and passed on from leader to manager to employee without awareness or acknowledgment of the true impact culture has on it’s employees and worse yet, it’s customers.

I have worked for companies with cultures of workaholism, micromanagement, disrespect for functions other than the services sold, and abusive verbal communication.  And not one of those companies had any of those things in their mission, vision, and values statement.  As a matter of fact, I was not aware if some of these companies even had a values statement.

Could you imagine working for a company who told you in the interview “We work our people 80 hours per week and you get to be micromanaged along the way”?  Would you buy from a Apple if they said “We think people who aren’t engineering the latest iProducts are worthless and stupid”?  I imagine your answer would be no to both.

Intentionally creating a Mission/Vision/Values (MVV) statement  is becoming more of a mainstream focus for organizations.  In the past, the exercise of creating an MVV was reserved for the large corporations with an executive team, but that is no longer the case.  Companies of all sizes are interested in actually designing and living their Mission, Vision and Values.  And with the three generations (baby boomers, gen X and millennials) of people in one workplace, companies have to find a way to get everyone on the same page of the same book so there isn’t disengagement and discourse.

In my work with executives and leadership teams, the “creating the right culture” conversation happens every day.  The amazing people I get to work with are truly interested in and investing in creating a culture that intentionally attracts and keeps engaged, committed and connected team members.  These leaders are using language like “team members” instead of “employees”, they are getting input, agreement and consensus so that everyone on the team feels valued and values each other.  As the organization grows and moves forward, everyone is not only sure that they are on a bus taking them where they want to go, but they are sure the bus has like minded people who care about the same things they do.

So what IS all the hubbub about creating the right company culture?  It is about business sustainability, growth.  It is about employee engagement.  And it is ultimately about business and personal fulfillment!

Coaching Exercise:  Identify the gap in what your company culture IS and what you WANT it to be.

Body Language Confidential by Traci Brown

October 3, 2013 By Kim Leave a Comment

Have you ever been talking with someone and the words coming out of their mouth doesn’t match the message you are receiving.  A great example of this is sarcasm.

Sarcasm is one type of communication that sends a conflicting message but what about all the other types of conflicting messages?  The limp handshake, the furrowed brow, crossed arms or rolling eyes.  I am specifically speaking about body language and my friend and colleague Traci Brown, is a body language expert who wrote a must have tool (aka book) for cracking the code of body language; Body Language Confidential.

This book gives you examples and pictures that help you recognize the meaning behind the movements that you witness with your colleagues, clients, spouse, kids and even people who find themselves on the evening news (politicians, athletes, criminals and others).

If you want to be better at communication you have to be better at understanding what is being communicated to you.  Body Language Confidential one of the best tools to have in your tool kit!

To busy the book, Body Language Confidential, and to learn more about Traci Brown go to her website.

Stellar Media Marketing

February 1, 2013 By Kim Leave a Comment

I have had the good fortune to work with Social Media Specialist & Consultant, Kelly Mirabella of Stellar Media Marketing. We have worked together as venture partners as well as serving on the DTC CBW board.  It has been such a joy to get to work with someone with such professionalism, knowledge and experience.  And it’s not so bad that she is fun and funny too 🙂

But the real value in getting to work with Kelly is her strait forward, get to the point of what’s effective with social media.  She is a entrepreneur’s dream in the content, classes, and services she delivers.  She helps small business owners get their social media strategy set and implemented.   Kelly does it all…she trains, consults, and even will do the “dirty work” of implementing your social media strategy that delivers results to your bottom line.

You can learn more about Kelly Mirabella and Stellar Media Marketing at http://www.stellarmediamarketing.com.

What’s “Your Thing”?

February 1, 2013 By Kim Leave a Comment

Welcome to 2013!  I am so excited for this year and all that it will bring.

My coaching practice has been steadily growing over the past six years and I have taken each step of the journey with hope, excitement and sometime fear.  Being an entrepreneur is by far the most challenging thing I have ever done.  It tests your endurance, dedication, drive and your mental, emotional and sometimes physical limits.  Partly because many things are new and partly because you have to be on top your game all the time.  Learning, stretching, growing and optimally performing as often as possible.

I recently had lunch with a friend and entrepreneurial colleague and discussed an endeavor she is involved with.  We got to talking about strategy, vision and purpose.  We then moved into discussing marketing and social media, topics that I have been learning and adding to my tool belt since I started business.  My friend said “WOW you know your marketing!”.  I thought “me know marketing?!…Are you serious? Marketing isn’t ‘my thing’, COACHING!  That’s my thing”.   You see, there are a few things that engineers are often known for not being good at.  Writing is one and marketing is another.  And if you are in a corporate position other than marketing or sales, you may have also thought “marketing and sales is just not my thing”.

But in order to grow my business I had to learn about marketing and sales.  I have been taking classes and implementing the learnings with a true intention and purpose.  These classes were not part of a large curriculum like at Colorado School of Mines or Coach U.  They weren’t for a degree or certification.  These classes were individual classes that when put together have given me a solid marketing foundation that has ultimately served my business and my professional development quite beautifully.

I now have new skills to add to my Success Timeline (see Boost Your Confidence Master Your Mindset for details).  I am now taking inventory of ALL of the tools in my tool belt that allow me consistent growth and success.  There are many other skills that I have developed along the way but for now, I am going to do the happy dance that marketing and sales have become in part “my thing”.

Coaching Question: What skills have you formally or informally been developing that have unexpectedly become “your thing”?

Think Sideways, a Game-Changing Playbook for Disruptive Thinking by Tamara Kleinberg

January 28, 2013 By Kim Leave a Comment

Last year I had the good fortune to meet Tamara Kleinberg, Serial Tinkerer at The Shuuk.  As VP of Programs for DTC CBW, I was interviewing her to speak at an upcoming meeting but found myself less focused on the interview and more so captivated by her innovative thinking and fun spirit.  She took curiosity to a whole new place and believe me, curiosity is job #1 of a coach.

After Tamara spoke at the DTC CBW meeting, I bought her book Think Sideways, a Game-Changing Playbook for Disruptive Thinking.  I started AND finished reading it over the weekend.  The book is truly a play book, like that of a football coach’s, where you can turn to learn the “plays” of innovative thinking and learn TO play in the world of innovation and imagination.

As a business coach I work with people to bring out their best for ultimate success.  Coaching is a process of co-creating and designing clients’ dreams into reality and the tools in this book not only are ones that my clients will use but that I will ultimately use in the co-creative process with them.

The back of the book states “This playbook is right for you if…

  • your rebellious side gets frustrated by a play-it safe culture
  • your inner entrepreneur keeps nudging you to break the rules
  • something deep down feels the need to disrupt the status quo
  • your desperately want to get out of the box that you are trapped in
  • your right brain is exhausted and needs a push to get organized.”

I also feel that this book is right for you if you want to feel inspired and motivated to reconnect with that part of you that gets fired up and excited about living life, career, and business creatively and fully engaged!

You can learn more about Tamara Kleinberg and her programs at http://www.theshuuk.com

and purchase Think Sideways, a Game-Changing Playbook for Disruptive Thinking Sideways amazon.com.
