Yes, the Election IS Affecting Your Business.

October 28, 2012 By Kim 2 Comments

Election day is almost here and whether you are a conservative or liberal or somewhere in between I am sure you have experienced the bombardment of campaign commercials, ads and political discussion.  While some of the discussion and media coverage can be tame, much of it is high spirited debate if not just plain ol’ arguing.

Now, I have never been really engaged in all the political discussions.  Mainly because one side of the family are liberals and the other conservatives.  And while my husband and I are on the same page, my mother and father are on opposite sides, as are my in-laws…makes for interesting silent pauses in conversations, for sure.

As I have thought about the issues at hand and the various perspectives, one thing is apparent, political discussions trigger something in me.  The reason is that they challenge my values, morals and perspectives.  Political discussions force us to determine which side of the fence we are willing to commit to and defend with our debate and actions.  And we are ultimately triggered to respond at some level.

So how does election affect business?  Is so many ways, both internal to your business as well as external.

Internally

  • Awareness of your personal values and standards are likely more present than in non election seasons
  • You are likely operating with heightened sensitivity to be “politically correct” or politically sensitive
  • There is an additional layer of tension due to the controversial climate
  • Daily distractions of political discussions and campaigns have become, or are becoming, tolerations that ultimately affect your state of consciousness

Externally

  • Clients and prospects are also being challenged as to their values and standards. They are likely, consciously or subconsciously, wanting to align more with those who have similar values and standards
  • Clients and prospects are operating with the same sensitivity and tension that you are
  • Prospects could be in a buying or decision making holding pattern until after the election or new year

And what are business owners to do with all this?  Here are a few things that I am doing to manage the affects of the election on my business:

  1. Internally focusing on alignment of values both personally and professionally
  2. Embracing that everyone comes from and operates by their own perspective
  3. Providing space for supportive conversations of business values, standards and perspective for clients and prospects
  4. Eliminating words, tone and conversation that unnecessarily adds to the existing tension filled climate
  5. Adding more humor and light heartedness to my day

As a business coach, it is my job to provide an environment for business owners to be supported, be creative and expansive.  The best way to do that is to help them eliminate those things that don’t serve them well including tension, anxiety, and frustration from external sources.

Coaching question: What can you do to eliminate the distraction and tension that affects your business?

Trish Downing – Author & Motivational Speaker

September 30, 2012 By Kim 2 Comments

Last year author and motivational speaker, Tricia Downing, spoke at the DTC CBW luncheon and was truly awe inspiring.  I had met “Trish” briefly a few weeks before at a book signing party and was impressed by her story but more so by her presence…actually by her essence!

Her story is that “In one instant, on September 17, 2000, Tricia went from being a competitive cyclist to a paraplegic requiring a wheelchair for mobility. Her life was changed forever, but Tricia’s competitive spirit and zest for life continued on” but doesn’t even begin to describe the absolutely wonderful woman that I have come to call my friend.

Trish is a competitor to her very core and uses the fuel of her fire to inspire and motivate abled-bodies and challenged-bodies in ways one could only imagine.

This year Tricia invited me to speak about goal setting at Camp Discovery, a retreat she created for women in wheel chairs “who have disorders of the spinal cord redefine themselves to live strong, productive and happy lives by, building self-esteem, creating a personal network and support system, inspiring a positive body image, and encouraging physical fitness.”

As you can tell, this Camp was created by one POWERFUL and AMAZING woman for powerful and amazing women.  I was honored by the invitation and was truly inspired and transformed by the women that attended.  These women shared with me their goals for Camp as well as their personal stories.  We laughed and enjoyed each other’s company and dug deep to find those things that hold us back – fear, lack of confidence, in accurate self perception and the list goes on.  Some women had been in chairs for years and some months.  One woman was in her 70’s and doing the zip line again!  I know…Inspiring right?!!!

I am working on putting into words my experience at Camp Discovery and will share with you all when I do.  But until then, check out Tricia Downing at her website and better yet, hire her to speak at your company or organization.  I assure you that the individuals that you work with, know and love will be inspired, motivated and transformed in ways you can’t begin to imagine.

Learn more about Tricia Downing at www.trishdowning.com and Camp Discovery here.

The Charge by Brendon Burchard

September 30, 2012 By Kim Leave a Comment

I started following Brendon Burchard just last year because I found him to be a no-nonsense guy who also truly comes from the heart.  He is captivating in his quest to help people be able to answer the questions…”Did I live? Did I love? Did I matter?”

This summer I received an initial-released copy of his book The Charge, Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive  and was absolutely amazed at how Brendon described that which creates a “charged” life.  Of course I was drawn to both the linear and factual aspects of The Five Baseline Drives and The Five Forward Drives that are described in his book as well as the stories and examples that ties all of the drives together.

This book is a MUST have and I will give you just a hint of what is covered to entice you to go out and pick one up for yourself…

Three of the 5 Baseline Drives

  1. The Drive for Control
  2. The Drive for Competence
  3. The Drive for Congruence…

Three of the 5 Forward Drives

  1. The Drive for Change
  2. The Drive for Challenge
  3. The Drive for Creative Expression…

Are you intrigued yet?? If not, you can watch the video about The Charge by clicking here.

I truly believe this is a book that should be on your shelf but also gifted to those who want to truly live the life of joy, purpose and fulfillment!

The Charge can be purchased at Amazon.com

The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles

August 31, 2012 By Kim Leave a Comment

Did you ever think there is an actual science to getting rich?  Well to be honest, I never did.  I thought there were people who were money driven and they became rich OR people who just got lucky.  Boy was I ever wrong!

In the book The Science of Getting Rich, Wallace D. Wattles explains the process by how people get rich.  And it is a process.  The process includes being in the right business, doing a great job, and focusing on expansion.  While these are obvious things in common with the rich there are other commonalities among the rich you just might not realize.

I am not going to spoil the book for you but I will tell you that a service and abundance mindset is included.

If you have money blocks or are just not quite where you want to be with your business or life financially, I highly recommend this book.  FYI – I include reading it in my daily practice…it’s THAT good!

You can check it our from the library, download the audiobook from itunes, or purchase it through a bookseller.
