When Does Being an “Organizer” Serve you?

February 10, 2013 By Kim 2 Comments

In the last blog I discussed the “C” – Commander in the CORE Multidimensional Awareness Profile® (click here to see the  previous blog).   This week we are focusing on the “O”- Organizer.  Remember from last time, we all have each of the traits C-O-R-E present in each of us.

Organizers are analytical thinking, detail oriented people who strive for accuracy and are great at problem solving.  They like order and logic and prefer clearly defined parameters.  For some, being an organizer comes naturally and some may have to work at it.

So if you don’t feel like a natural born Organizer here are a few coaching questions…

  1. When does your Organizer kick in?
  2. What are the circumstances or situations that your Organizer is most present?

You may be thinking “Kim, I am NEVER an organizer” but I challenge you to think of the times that you had to be an organizer.  Times that you wanted to focus on the details or even just felt your problem solving skills kicking in.  Maybe it was balancing your checkbook or preparing for a very important event in your life, or even a time you just wanted things to be clearly defined so you could make a good decision.  You may not express your Organizer on a daily or regular basis but I can assure you, your Organizer has indeed kicked in at some point in your life.

Your assignment is the same as last week, take a personal inventory of when, in the past 2 weeks, has your Organizer has stepped in to require details, facts, order and logic.  And how energized did you feel when it happened.

If you found that being an Organizer feels draining, look back at your energy level when you are being a Commander.  If being either an Organizer or Commander leaves you feeling drained, stay tuned for the next few weeks of blogs where I discuss the remaining two CORE ® types.  :)

Stellar Media Marketing

February 1, 2013 By Kim Leave a Comment

I have had the good fortune to work with Social Media Specialist & Consultant, Kelly Mirabella of Stellar Media Marketing. We have worked together as venture partners as well as serving on the DTC CBW board.  It has been such a joy to get to work with someone with such professionalism, knowledge and experience.  And it’s not so bad that she is fun and funny too 🙂

But the real value in getting to work with Kelly is her strait forward, get to the point of what’s effective with social media.  She is a entrepreneur’s dream in the content, classes, and services she delivers.  She helps small business owners get their social media strategy set and implemented.   Kelly does it all…she trains, consults, and even will do the “dirty work” of implementing your social media strategy that delivers results to your bottom line.

You can learn more about Kelly Mirabella and Stellar Media Marketing at http://www.stellarmediamarketing.com.

Is there a Commander in You?

February 1, 2013 By Kim 3 Comments

I have always been fascinated with what makes people who they are.  I’ve been draw to nature vs. nurture conversations and have been a personality assessment junkie!  I have taken the MBTI, DiSC Assessment, The Birkman Method Assessment and many others.  I love the insight that personality profiles provide so much that I became an authorized facilitator of the DiSC and the Birkman.

And then I discovered the CORE MAP®!  This profile takes assessments to a whole new level and provides depth and tools you can use to be a better leader, more self-aware, maximize effectiveness, and develop effective communication strategies.

The acronym CORE ® stands for Commander-Organizer-Relater-Entertainer and today I am going to talk about the commander.  Commanders seek to lead, they are bold risk takers who are goal oriented, problem solvers and are results oriented.  Commanders like to take action and desire efficiency and a sense of control.

So here is the question….Is there a commander in you?  And the answer is…Of course there is!  There is a commander in all of us.  Given the right circumstance every person has the ability to step in the commander role.  Sometimes it is because the job requires it and sometimes because what we want is bigger than any other traits that we may possess.  Just ask the mama bear 😉

Obviously there are natural commanders, you know the types, the “born leaders”.  But the truth is that we all possess and have the ability to develop and learn commander skills.  We all have times in our lives that we dig deep, take charge and get IT done!

So, while there are natural born commanders and developed commanders, the million dollar questions are…

  1. How often are you being a commander (by chance or by choice)?
  2. When you are being a commander, are  you energized or drained?

The answers to these questions can lead you to insights and tools to help you be more effective and fulfilled in your personal and professional life.  I encourage you to take a personal inventory of when, in the past 2 weeks, has your commander taken and charge AND how energized did you feel as it happened.

And if you found that being a commander is draining or you feel you are being one too often…stay tuned for the next several weeks of blogs where I discuss the other CORE ® types 🙂

What’s “Your Thing”?

February 1, 2013 By Kim Leave a Comment

Welcome to 2013!  I am so excited for this year and all that it will bring.

My coaching practice has been steadily growing over the past six years and I have taken each step of the journey with hope, excitement and sometime fear.  Being an entrepreneur is by far the most challenging thing I have ever done.  It tests your endurance, dedication, drive and your mental, emotional and sometimes physical limits.  Partly because many things are new and partly because you have to be on top your game all the time.  Learning, stretching, growing and optimally performing as often as possible.

I recently had lunch with a friend and entrepreneurial colleague and discussed an endeavor she is involved with.  We got to talking about strategy, vision and purpose.  We then moved into discussing marketing and social media, topics that I have been learning and adding to my tool belt since I started business.  My friend said “WOW you know your marketing!”.  I thought “me know marketing?!…Are you serious? Marketing isn’t ‘my thing’, COACHING!  That’s my thing”.   You see, there are a few things that engineers are often known for not being good at.  Writing is one and marketing is another.  And if you are in a corporate position other than marketing or sales, you may have also thought “marketing and sales is just not my thing”.

But in order to grow my business I had to learn about marketing and sales.  I have been taking classes and implementing the learnings with a true intention and purpose.  These classes were not part of a large curriculum like at Colorado School of Mines or Coach U.  They weren’t for a degree or certification.  These classes were individual classes that when put together have given me a solid marketing foundation that has ultimately served my business and my professional development quite beautifully.

I now have new skills to add to my Success Timeline (see Boost Your Confidence Master Your Mindset for details).  I am now taking inventory of ALL of the tools in my tool belt that allow me consistent growth and success.  There are many other skills that I have developed along the way but for now, I am going to do the happy dance that marketing and sales have become in part “my thing”.

Coaching Question: What skills have you formally or informally been developing that have unexpectedly become “your thing”?

Think Sideways, a Game-Changing Playbook for Disruptive Thinking by Tamara Kleinberg

January 28, 2013 By Kim Leave a Comment

Last year I had the good fortune to meet Tamara Kleinberg, Serial Tinkerer at The Shuuk.  As VP of Programs for DTC CBW, I was interviewing her to speak at an upcoming meeting but found myself less focused on the interview and more so captivated by her innovative thinking and fun spirit.  She took curiosity to a whole new place and believe me, curiosity is job #1 of a coach.

After Tamara spoke at the DTC CBW meeting, I bought her book Think Sideways, a Game-Changing Playbook for Disruptive Thinking.  I started AND finished reading it over the weekend.  The book is truly a play book, like that of a football coach’s, where you can turn to learn the “plays” of innovative thinking and learn TO play in the world of innovation and imagination.

As a business coach I work with people to bring out their best for ultimate success.  Coaching is a process of co-creating and designing clients’ dreams into reality and the tools in this book not only are ones that my clients will use but that I will ultimately use in the co-creative process with them.

The back of the book states “This playbook is right for you if…

  • your rebellious side gets frustrated by a play-it safe culture
  • your inner entrepreneur keeps nudging you to break the rules
  • something deep down feels the need to disrupt the status quo
  • your desperately want to get out of the box that you are trapped in
  • your right brain is exhausted and needs a push to get organized.”

I also feel that this book is right for you if you want to feel inspired and motivated to reconnect with that part of you that gets fired up and excited about living life, career, and business creatively and fully engaged!

You can learn more about Tamara Kleinberg and her programs at http://www.theshuuk.com

and purchase Think Sideways, a Game-Changing Playbook for Disruptive Thinking Sideways amazon.com.
